The annual HELP English Debate Competition was held in HELPCAT Campus Sungai Besi on the 3rd and 4th of the month respectively. The competition was attended by 32 teams from various secondary schools, colleges and universities in Malaysia including one team from our school which consisted of Sean Ng and Chew Wei Zhuen from Year 10B and Samantha Goh from Year 9N. Charmaine Tan (Y10B) and Chong Ming Xuan (Y9B) also attended with the former as a reservist (an extra debater) and the latter as an adjudicator (a judge in the debate competition).
The Nobel debate team ranked 18th out of the 32, winning one out of three preliminary rounds. They managed to beat SMK Convent Ave Maria in Round 2 but unfortunately lost to SMK Convent Bukit Nanas and SMK Victoria Institution in Round 1 and Round 3 respectively. The team fell short of the 16th place with a cumulative score of 731.5 points and did not manage to break into the octo-finals.
The trio debated on the Government side in Round 1 with the motion “This house would not award any scholarships to smokers” Round 2 saw them on the Opposition bench, debating the motion “This house would send all prisoners to a pre-determined empty island instead of prisons”. Round 3 had an interesting motion with Ng, Chew and Goh debating the Government side on the motion “This house believes that superheroes should not have to hide their identities from the public”.
SMK Damansara Jaya emerged as the overall champion during the finals on Sunday with Methodist Boys School KL being the first runner-up and SMK Damansara Utama being the second runner-up.
